7 must-try sandwich shops in Victoria to celebrate National Sandwich Day

(Work Culture/Instagram)

Hey Victoria, it’s National Sandwich Day!

“The sandwiches are beautiful, the sandwiches are good. I like sandwiches, I eat them all the time. I eat them for my supper and I eat them for my lunch. If I had a hundred sandwiches, I would eat them all at once.

—Fred Penner, musical genius

We share Fred’s sandwich sentiment here at Victoria Buzz.

That’s why, to celebrate this almost holy day, we want to share with you seven must-see places to get a bunch of stuff between the loaves.

But first, let’s get a few things straight…

A sandwich is bread on top, bread on the bottom. A hot dog is not a sandwich, a pizza is not a sandwich, and for the purposes of this list, a hamburger is not a sandwich.

Alright, now that we’ve got that sorted, let’s go.

Here are the seven best sandwich restaurants in Victoria:

work culture

No soggy breads here.

Some of the best breads in town by far. Perfect crispy crust with the soft, delicate and moist interior.

Their BLT vegan tofu is especially delicious.

They also prepare their sandwiches in advance, so no need to wait for a sandwich artist to complete your order. You just need to grab it and rip it.

  • Where: 2506 Douglas Street
  • When: Thursday to Sunday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday only until 3 p.m.

HERO

Simplicity makes every bite perfect.

HERO is a new addition to our town’s sandwich scene.

They operate a pop-up only sandwich destination where Victoria lines up for blocks and sells them out every time.

They sold 234 sandwiches out of 45 sandwiches during their last pop-up.

Follow them on Instagram to keep up with them and find out about their next pop-up later in November.

Banh Mi Ba Le Victoria

Vietnamese subs are exactly what a sandwich should be.

Tart from pickled daikon and carrot, fatty from pork belly or charcuterie, crispy on the outside chewy on the inside from baguette and cilantro to tie it all together.

This place is unassuming on the outside, but you just can’t find a better place for a Vietnamese sub.

  • Where: 774 Fort Street
  • When: Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Parts and Packages

A story of two sandwiches. Both are perfect.

Their veggie sandwich features broccoli charred to perfection with creamy goat feta cheese, zesty pickled onions and soft date puree.

Their meat sandwich is an almond crusted kamut fried chicken sandwich, with cilantro, creamy coleslaw and a spicy chili garlic aioli.

You do not know which one to choose ? Bring a friend and split them!

  • Where: 2656 Quadra Street
  • When: Tuesday to Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Italian food imports

A small bodega style deli that is quite inexpensive and incredibly delicious.

Italians really know how to make a sandwich and Italian food imports are no slouch on that reputation.

You can get deli style sandwiches, paninis, salads, charcuterie and anything else remotely Italian.

If you are hosting a party or need catering, you should definitely consider a sandwich platter from them.

  • Where: 1114 Blanshard Street
  • When: Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Wheeled motorcycles

Motorcycles and sandwiches are an unlikely, but perfect combination.

They’ve had sandwiches that come and go over the years, but their Discovery Coffee Rubbed Brisket Sandwich is a mainstay you just have to try.

They also always have a vegetarian option, a cheap breakfast sandwich, and pristine grilled cheese.

Wheelies also offers salads, soups and macaroni and cheese to accompany the sandwich of your choice.

  • Where: 2620 Rock Bay Ave
  • When: Tuesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Parson’s Cafe

Let’s talk about breakfast sandwiches.

Parsonage Cafe is the showcase of the incomparable Fernwood Cafe.

Many have tried to create the perfect fried egg sandwich that can tantalize the taste buds into an aroused state. Few nailed it on that front though.

“A breakfast bagel with everything” is all you have to say, along with the caffeinated beverage you desire.

You’ll get a perfect bagel with an egg, cheese, steamed spinach, tomato, and thick cut bacon.

It will welcome you for the rest of your day and it doesn’t get any better than that.

  • Where: 1105 Caledonia Avenue
  • When: Monday to Sunday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

We know there are lots of amazing places to try in Victoria, so if you think we’ve missed anyone on this list, let us know!
