Alstom wins €98 million contract to design and manufacture 78 metro cars for Chennai Metro Phase II

These advanced metro cars will be manufactured at Alstom’s industrial site in Sricity

CHENNAI, India, November 11, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Alstom has been awarded a contract worth 98 million euros (INR 798 crore) to design, manufacture, supply, test and commission 78 advanced metro cars by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). These new metro cars will run on the 26km corridor, part of Phase II which will connect Poonamallee Bypass – Light House through 28 stations (18 elevated and 10 underground).

The scope of the contract includes the manufacture of 26 metro trains (three-car configuration) capable of operating at a maximum speed of 80 km/h, as well as the training of personnel. With a 25 kV power supply for optimum energy efficiency, Alstom’s Metropolis metros will provide safe and reliable passenger transport for the city’s more than 11 million citizens. Furthermore, the overall project will contribute significantly to socio-economic development by linking key areas.

Subway trains are designed and engineered to operate without a driver through Unattended Train Operations (UTO). These trains can completely rone on signals and its operations will be monitored from the Operations Control Center (OCC).

In line with the government’s “Make in” initiative India‘ vision, these metro cars will be 100% indigenous, Manufactured in one of Alstom’s largest urban rolling stock manufacturing plants, in Sricity, Andhra Pradesh. This facility has an annual production capacity of 480 cars and a strong restoration portfolio for several national and international metro projects.

Previously, Alstom manufactured and delivered 208 metro cars for the 54 km Phase One + Extension of Corridor-I from Airport to Wimco Nagar and Corridor-II from Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount. These trains are equipped with Automatic Train Protection (ATP) and Automatic Train Operation (ATO), as well as a regenerative braking system ensuring significant energy savings. In addition to this, the company successfully designed, tested and commissioned the track works covering 45 km of Corridors I and II for the Chennai Subway.
