An urgent license review hearing – requested by West Midlands Police following events in the early hours of February 21 – took place on Wednesday.

Separately, a Birmingham City Council licensing sub-committee has now taken the decision to suspend the site’s license.

In documents to the sub-committee, West Midlands Police Superintendent Jim Munro said: ‘Cross Keys Banqueting and Catering is a licensed establishment located in Steward Street, Springhill, Birmingham.

“The premises are in a side street which includes a number of commercial premises. There are no other authorized premises nearby. The place is a place of destination.

“Premises are licensed for live music, recorded music, dance performances, late night refreshments and retail alcohol sales until 1 a.m. late morning to 1 a.m.

“At 3.19am on February 21, a call from the ambulance service alerted the police to an incident at the scene.

“A man was found injured and despite the efforts of the emergency services, the man was pronounced dead.

“The injuries are believed to have been caused following an incident inside the premises. A murder investigation is ongoing.

“West Midlands Police are concerned that at a time when the premises did not have a business license a man has tragically lost his life and want to bring this to the urgent attention of the licensing committee.”

The hearing was held largely behind closed doors due to the investigation into the murder – but at the end of the meeting advisers said the license had been suspended pending a full review hearing on 21 March at 12:30 p.m.

In addition, the committee made the decision to remove the Site Designated Space Supervisor from his position.

An arrest was made by West Midlands Police on February 22 and the person has now been released while the investigation continues.
