By India Today Web Desk: Many design schools only offer alumni courses in a few blueprint subjects like visual expressions, realistic design, style design, material design, game design, etc. Design has therefore become a mainstream career option.

The design and creative industry in India represents a dynamic, varied and dynamic sector that is growing at a phenomenal rate. The most obvious reason to be happy to be a designer is that you get paid to be creative.


To enroll in a design course in India, you need to know the placement tests and qualification standards for various projects.

All candidates who sit for level +2 examinations in the 10+2 examination pattern of any recognized central/state board of secondary examination subject to certain age limits, regardless of major (science, humanities and business) are eligible.

There is no strict percentage criterion. Obviously, you will have to pass some tests to get into these universities.

Here are five design entrance exams in India you should check out:


The National Institute of Design (NID) offers graduate courses in Bachelor of Design. The four-year Bachelor of Design program is offered only at NID.

It offers specializations in the Faculty of Industrial Design, Faculty of Communication Design, Faculty of Textile, Apparel, Lifestyle and Accessories Design, and Ceramic and Glass Design.


  • The selection test is separated into NID DAT Prelims and NID DAT Mains. The preliminaries are a compound test – you want to clear them to continue to the sector. This part of the test includes plan hypotheses, innovative reasoning and composition, demonstration strategies, creative thinking and doodling, etc.
  • The Mains contains thinking, problem solving and observation tests, as well as a studio test which can be followed by a series of interviews.

Qualification: The qualification for different courses is a basic academic ability of 10 + 2 (eliminated or presenting) in any stream subject to the age limit.


This test is organized by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). As one of the best-known planning tests, it is held once a year in 32 cities across the country.


  • Aspirants who wish to pursue BDes must appear for 2 Stages – Stage -1 – Creative Ability Test (CAT) and General Ability Test (GAT), and Stage -2 i.e. Situational Test.
  • Applications for 2023 tentatively begin the first week of November


Competitors must have at least 10+2 (cleared or appearing) in any stream (Science, Commerce, and Arts) to appear for this test.


Admissions to Bachelor of Design (BDes) programs at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad and IIITDM Jabalpur are through the examination of Common Undergraduate Entry in Design (UCEED).

Students who have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2022, or appearing in 2023, in any major (Science, Commerce or Arts and Humanities) are eligible to attend UCEED 2023.


  • The questionnaire will consist of two parts: Part-A is a computer-based test that judges you on visualization and spatial ability, observation and design sensitivity, environmental and social awareness, analytical and logical reasoning, language and creativity, conceptual thinking and resolution problems.
  • Part-B is a pen-and-pad based test that judges you on your ability to draw products, people, or scenes in proportion with good line quality, composition, proportion, perspective, and shading.


United World Institute of Design is one of the pioneer design institutes in India. Every year, it organizes tests for students to show their creativity and further their career in design by taking admission to UG and PG courses.


  • This plane placement tests your mindfulness, thinking, and perception. This is followed by a studio test at UID campuses and a portfolio round, where you are expected to prove your material handling, followed by presentation of your portfolio and appearance for an interview.
  • The test is held annually in January and applications begin in October each year.

Qualification: Newcomers must have at least 10+2 (eliminated or showing up) in any stream to stand for this test.


It is one of India’s leading institutes in the fields of design, fashion, business and media. It offers over 40 uniquely designed campus-based courses.

The academy has become a world-renowned institution of higher learning, focusing on internationalism, entrepreneurship and employability, and serving the needs of the design, fashion, business and retail sectors. .

Test: This placement test for planning after twelfth grade expects you to pass the Overall Ability Test (General Proficiency Test – GPT), the Plane Tilt Test (Design Aptitude Test -DAT) followed by a interview and a portfolio review.


  • Candidates must have at least 10+2 (eliminated or showing) with half in any stream to appear for this test.
  • The test takes place in 2-3 cycles starting in January and applications start in October each year.
