Mobile ration stores reach almost every remote hamlet in Nagapattinam

NAGAPATTINAM

Almost all the remote villages have been covered by the program of distribution of basic necessities through mobile ration shops in the district.

With the latest addition of hamlet 75-Anakudi under the scheme implemented by the Department of Co-operatives, there are now 109 mobile ration shops serving as many hamlets within two or three kilometers of the nearest fair price shop.

Since reliance on fair price shops is inevitable for their economic sustenance, residents of hamlet 75-Anakudi whose ration cards were the responsibility of Irunjaiyur village in Kilvelur block had to ‘now give up wages for two days a month in order to buy the essentials.

The Mobile Shop Essentials Program has spared villagers the need to rent cars to buy essentials from nearby ration shops. According to officials, ration card holders end up spending at least ₹100 carrying essentials in cars.

“Some even carry more than 50 kg of basic necessities, including 40 kg of rice. Villagers in remote areas can now get supplies easily,” said KP Arularasu, Joint Registrar of Cooperatives.

Earlier this week, District Collector A. Arun Thamburaj and MLA Deputy Chairman of Kilvelur Nagai Malli launched the 109th Mobile Ration Shop at Hamlet 75-Anaikudi.

Of the 325 ration card holders under the responsibility of the Irunjaiyur Village Fair Price Shop, 115 belong to 25-Anaikudi.

Cooperative societies coordinate the operation of mobile ration stores and the distribution of basic necessities. There is a separate fuel penalty for vehicles used for this purpose, Arularasu said.

The department facilitates the establishment of part-time fair-price shops in the event that the number of family cardholders exceeds 150 in a particular location.

Fair price mobile stores have been of immense help to people for the duration of the COVID pandemic lockdown.
