According to, the oldest commercially made candy in America was the “Gibraltors”, made by a woman named Mrs. Spencer who was shipwrecked traveling from England and landed in Salem, MA. Destitute, she received a barrel of sugar and Gibraltors was born. The business was passed on to a family friend, John Pepper, hence the name of the business. Pepper is credited with creating our country’s other famous origins candy, “Blackjacks”.
