Opportunity to open a new cafe at Newtown’s Riverside Venue

An opportunity has arisen to open a new cafe at the £1.5m Riverside Venue in Newtown.

Open Newtown, which manages the project, is inviting tenders for the rental, management and maintenance of a food franchise in the new building which is due to be completed this spring.

Managing Director Gary Mitchell said, “We’re not just looking for the most economically advantageous offer at the end of the evaluation process.

“We’re also looking for someone who provides a complementary food offering to existing food outlets in the city and leads the way in low carbon thinking.”

In 2019 plans for a large cafe were reduced from 178 seats to 25 following complaints from local businesses that it would drive customers away from the city centre.

The Riverside Venue will also include a small shop, tourist information area, changing rooms and community halls which will be available to host and support events in the city.

The successful coffee shop franchisee will need to have experience running a busy coffee shop or restaurant and providing an “enjoyable, premium dining experience” with “friendly, prompt and efficient” customer service.

They will also have equipment, utensils, crockery and cutlery provided to them, as well as an “emblematic space” for commerce as well as the possibility of expanding the operation to other nearby locations.

The closing date for the tender is February 23 and a final decision on the new operator is expected in March. Potential bidders can access more details on the Sell2Wales website

The Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns Fund and the National Lottery’s Community Fund in Wales funded the development which was also supported by Powys County Council and Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council.
