The owner of two cafes which both burned down at the same time awaits the results of an arson investigation

Last Thursday evening Sky McKinneyowner of Grind Coffee Bistro at 11525 Cantrell Road and the Grind Coffee Bistro in Pettaway at 21st Street and Commerce, received a phone call that his Cantrell location was on fire.

“It was one of the most devastating phone calls you could imagine,” Mckinney said. And she didn’t discover her other location was also on fire until two to three hours later.

The Grind Coffee Bistro on Cantrell suffered mostly water damage, Mckinney said, and she plans to reopen within the next two weeks. “The Pettaway location was a total loss,” Mckinney said. She plans to rebuild.

“That’s why you pay for your insurance, but it’s like all my hard work. I painted the walls. I built the bar. This is the part that hurts the most. We can get through this and I can speak my truth and tell my story, but right now we are trying to pick up the pieces where we can,” she said.

Mckinney said she couldn’t say much about the suspected cause of the fires as an active investigation is ongoing by the Little Rock Fire Department.

The Grind Coffee Bistro on Cantrell opened in April 2018 and the Pettaway location just opened in December 2021. In addition to coffee and pastries, The Grind offers lunch options, Sunday brunch, catering services and meal preparation.

A friend of Mckinney’s has started a gofundme fundraiser to help Mckinney with expenses while the investigation is ongoing.

“We’re just thankful no one was hurt and everyone is safe. We will rebuild and reopen and continue to grow,” Mckinney said.
